Wrestling anxiety in the campus arena

Philippians 4:6 -7. “Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and petition with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. 7 And the peace of God that passes all understanding will guard your hearts and minds in Christ Jesus.”

This is one of the scriptures l quote nearly everyday when l pray. The word of God is medicine for me and l value what the word of God does to my spirit.

God has got such a sense of humour! Recently I have been going through a season which l have found so challenging. Anxiety and fear were my unexpected visitors that came and rocked my world. I am passionate about prayer, just like most of us l like those instant answers to prayer. What do you do when the answer takes longer and all you see is this anxiety getting the better of you? God has taken me back into the word and what an amazing journey it has been. Anxiety may hit us, but am grateful to God for the power of prayer. I found prayer to be such an amazing tool.

I know time is an issue but l would greatly encourage you to carve out time for it. Ten minutes a day makes a huge difference to feed your spirit on God's truth. Memorize scripture, even one scripture a week and meditate on it. I have actually found that when you have these shaky moments, it is helpful to open your mouth and pray out what the word says. For me it is like an injection that the Lord gives me and calms me down.

God has brought us this far not to abandon us but to take us to higher places. Don't be discouraged with what you see in the physical but trust God to move you from where you are. Believe me when l say l was in a bad shape, but God has been guiding and strengthening me.

These are some of the things God has been helping with me. I asked for other people to pray with & for me. I surrounded myself with people who are stronger in the faith. The power of death and life are in the tongue, so l have learnt to speak life bearing words. We tend to be so careless with our words, speaking negative things over our lives. The Bible says, God calls those things that be not as though they were, Romans 4:17. So say what the word of God says concerning that anxiety instead of just repeating how anxious you are.

I want encourage you that there is nothing that God cannot do. He is the great I am. Don't look at the storm in front of you and give up. I remember going to prayer meetings and l was out of it. I was saying to myself, what am I even doing here? But it did me a world of good just to hear the saints praying. His grace is sufficient and his power is made perfect in weakness. Therefore we will boast all the more in our weakness so that God's power may rest upon us.

The key is to meditate on his word day and night and keep our eyes focussed on him. When the enemy sends his darts, hit back with scripture. I know God is in control and He is faithful. He gives daily strength, lavishes us with his love on us and He promises that they who wait upon the Lord shall renew their strength, they shall mount up with wings as eagles, run and not grow weary, Isaiah 40:31.

Even on those bad days, I am confident in him that he will bring me through. May faith arise in each one of you; the God we serve is incredible. He finishes what he starts. Nothing shall be impossible with God. May the joy of the Lord be your strength. In this world we all have trouble but we must be of good cheer for he has overcome. When we are not at peace, the enemy has a field day with us. My prayer is that quietness and trust becomes our strength. We serve the God who created each star, one by one, and calls them by name. Not one of them is missing because of his mighty strength.

Finally, earn to ask for help, because we have a great community at Jubilee so you are never alone. I am still learning and enjoying the journey of walking with the Lord. Even in these hard seasons, God gives us beauty instead of ashes. He will use the difficult things we go through and may we rejoice always as the word tells us.
I pray that you will not let anxiety overwhelm you but let our Almighty God flood you with His peace that passes all understanding. Rest in his wonderful arms. Know that you are greatly & eternally blessed, highly & divinely favoured and deeply & unconditionally loved. Amen.
